Project Description

All-flash storage server

Big data leads to increasing the amount of data needed to be stored and accessed. Compared to exabytes of data generated by users until 2003, nowadays this amount of data is generated in just a few days. Furthermore, the amount of data would double every two years. As data-sensitive applications (e.g., streaming, online transaction, social networking) are diversifying, the amount of data is also increased.

IT industry concentrates on building scalable storage clusters shared by many users while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS). Scalability is the crux of the storage clusters because big data increases the amount of data needed to be stored and accessed. Guaranteeing QoS is also important because many users share a single storage cluster. Storage vendors (e.g., PureStorage, EMC, SolidFire) and open source projects (e.g., Ceph, OpenStack Swift, Gluster) provide scalable storage clusters.

Some storage vendors provide multiple storage tiers based on different service level agreement s(SLA). Figure 1 shows an example of storage virtual machine (SVM) and performance isolation for each SVM.

We are currently focusing on the following topics.

  • QoS management among multiple SSDs
  • Architecture of scale-out storage server
  • Flash-aware storage server
